Samsung's Brighter Screen May Illuminate Apple's Upcoming Vision Pro Headset

Apple made waves by introducing its inaugural mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, last year, but eager consumers are still awaiting its availability. Recent reports suggest that Apple is gearing up for the Vision Pro's official launch in March 2024, with a hefty price tag of $3,500. Excitingly, the next-generation headset from Apple is rumored to feature a more luminous and power-efficient screen, potentially sourced from Samsung.

According to a fresh report from market research firm Omdia, Apple might unveil the next-generation Vision Pro headset in 2027. Unlike the current model, this iteration could sport an RGB OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) screen, known for its heightened brightness and expanded color luminance. Unlike the current setup where light loss occurs when the white backlight passes through a color filter, an RGB OLEDoS screen could overcome this limitation.
Several companies produce MicroOLED panels with color filters, but their production capacity is limited. In a strategic move, Samsung Display recently acquired the US-based firm eMagin, the sole producer of RGB OLEDoS panels for military applications. This acquisition positions Samsung to potentially supply Apple with OLEDoS panels for its upcoming Vision Pro headset, with plans for increased production capacities.
The existing Vision Pro boasts a 1.42-inch OLEDoS screen, offering a resolution of 3,648 x 3,144 pixels and a pixel density of 3,391ppi. Notably, Apple utilizes two displays on either side of the headset, incorporating an outer 6-inch screen with an OLED panel from LG Display. This outer screen features a resolution of 800 x 360 pixels and a pixel density of 145ppi.
As the tech world eagerly awaits Apple's foray into mixed reality, the potential integration of Samsung's advanced screen technology in the next-generation Vision Pro headset adds a layer of anticipation to the future of augmented reality experiences. Stay tuned for further updates as Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the realm of immersive technology.
