Upcoming Weekend Brings the Highly Anticipated Annual Bonsai Exhibition to Kannapolis
Bonsai enthusiasts, gardening aficionados, and art lovers alike are in for a treat as bonsai artists and vendors from across the USA converge to showcase their intricate creations. Set against the stunning backdrop of the marble-lined domed atrium at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, the Winter Silhouette Bonsai Show promises a visual feast for attendees.
Now in its 11th year, this captivating event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday, Dec. 3 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Admission and parking are free, offering a wonderful opportunity to witness the beauty of over 30 bonsai supply vendors and learn more about this ancient art form and hobby.
The show features engaging bonsai demonstrations and lessons each day at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., led by renowned bonsai masters such as William Valavanis from New York, Rodney Clemons from Georgia, and Tyler Sherrod from North Carolina. For those seeking to add to their collection, a bonsai auction open to all will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3.
In addition to the impressive display of top-quality bonsai trees, attendees can explore more than 50 tables offering pre-bonsai plant material and bonsai supplies, including exceptional bonsai pots.
Curious about bonsai? Originating in China and later embraced by the Japanese, bonsai, meaning "tree in a pot" in Japanese, is an ancient art form. Displayed prominently are trees gifted to the U.S. by Japan during the bicentennial, some dating back to before Columbus discovered America, showcased at the National Arboretum.
Bonsai, a harmonious blend of sculpture and gardening, rewards practitioners with the gradual improvement of trees over time. Achieved through wiring branches and root pruning, bonsai trees create the illusion of miniature old trees, with only tropical bonsai suitable for indoor maintenance.
The Southeast has emerged as a hub of excellence in bonsai, hosting various bonsai masters and nationally recognized shows. The Winter Silhouette Bonsai Show is one of three notable events in the region, complemented by a smaller-size bonsai show in June in Kannapolis and an annual show at the NC Arboretum in Asheville. Bonsai enthusiasts can connect with local clubs in Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh, and Columbia, South Carolina, further fostering a vibrant bonsai community.
